Biblical Parallels in the Chronicles of Narnia

Cindy Fawcett
Recommended Grade Levels: 7-9

This class will explore the fascinating book series written by C.S. Lewis about the world of Narnia. We will discuss the themes, characters and symbolism in each of the books as well as the numerous parallels and references to scripture. My hope is that the students will discover a richness and depth of meaning far beyond the written story.

This class requires reading (or listening to) 3-4 chapters of a book each week. Students may buy the books or borrow them from the library. There are multiple websites/downloads online as well. Class discussion will be an important component to the class. Students will be expected to come to class having read the assigned chapters and ready to contribute their thoughts.

We will read and discuss the books in the following order:

The Magician’s Nephew

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

A Horse and His Boy

Prince Caspian

The Voyage of the Dawn Treader

The Silver Chair

The Last Battle
